06 Core Values

“There is a place for you in this industry.”

Chef Robert Hale · Hero Stories

Introduction

The five things the Chapter holds, in order. They decide what the Chapter does and does not do, and they set the way it writes.

Sequence

Five values, always in this order.

work→duty→table→chain→standard

The values run in the order a career does: first the work, then the duty to teach it, then the table where it is shared, then the chain that carries it on, and finally the standard that ties it together. They are always numbered in Roman numerals, I to V.

Mastery

Core Value I / V · The work

Earned, never claimed. The Chapter recognises work done well over many years, and nothing else.

Mentorship

Core Value II / V · The duty

The first duty of a master is to teach. Knowledge belongs to whoever uses it next.

Hospitality

Core Value III / V · The table

A chef’s first office. We host. We welcome. We feed.

Lineage

Core Value IV / V · The chain

We honour the cooks who taught us by teaching the cooks who will outlast us.

Quiet Excellence

Core Value V / V · The standard

The work speaks. We do not need to. Restraint is its own announcement.
